![]() ![]() ![]() The Lord’s Supper encourages us to re-dedicate ourselves to being crucified with Christ and letting him live in us (Romans 12:3, Galatians 2:20). When we examine ourselves honestly, we find ourselves unrighteous without Christ, and greatly in need of the sacrifice he made. We are to partake of the Lord’s Supper in a spirit of self examination. "Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup." We look INWARD to ourselves The Lord’s Supper week by week helps us stay focussed on the real purpose of this short life (James 4:14, Revelation 3:3). We know that eternity could be upon any one of us at any moment either by death or by the Lord’s return. That is why the hymn writer called it "the little while between". till he come." We look FORWARD to eternityįor each of us individually, "till he comes" means "till I die". Anyone can preach Christ in this manner (Colossians 4:5). Going to the Supper is preaching by example. When we assemble to partake of the Lord’s Supper, we are making a statement that Christ died for the world, and we set an example to all those who observe us keeping our weekly appointment with the Lord at his table. "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death." We look OUTWARD to the lost His body and blood were a sacrifice for our sins (Hebrews 10:19-20). When we partake of the fruit of the vine, we remember that the blood of Christ was poured out of his body. When we partake of the unleavened bread, we remember that Christ’s body was cruelly treated and nailed to the cross. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial supper, a ceremony of remembrance. "Do this in remembrance of me." We look BACKWARD to the cross This is a chart lesson based on 1Corinthians 11:20-34. Above all, remember the God who gave you life and loved you as you plan your estate. Some of these will be explored in future articles. There are many forms of bequests that can be made. ![]() We will be remembered by our giving and that is one of the best legacies we can leave. That is stewardship that leaves a wonderful legacy. Through our estate plans, we can both provide for our loved ones and, at the same time, make a faithful distribution to God to further kingdom work. God wants us to use what He has given us wisely throughout our lifetimes and even beyond. ![]() All that we did and have has been a gift from God. We have an opportunity to use our estates to be a witness to our faith and to give a demonstration of our stewardship. Help provide resources that will allow today’s children and their children to worship God, serve others, and continue the ministries of the church and of God. Help support and strengthen our ministries in perpetuity. Your faith can be demonstrated and transferred to the next generation and to generations to come through the church. One of the best legacies you can leave is more than a memory, it is a bequest that provides financial or spiritual assistance to those left behind!Ĭonsider a charitable bequest to Idlewild Baptist Church. Work now to form and shape those memories and plan to leave behind something good. You will leave a legacy of some type whether you plan for it or not! There will be memories of you that will remain. I do not know anyone who wants to be only an empty space in a pew on the Sunday after their funeral. We leave things, often referred to as “keepsakes,” for that purpose. It is a natural desire to want to be appreciated and equally natural for people to want to be remembered. In fact, the permanency of the Bible itself is a form of legacy, a Word left for those who follow so they can know what has gone on before them. The book of Deuteronomy is a book of legacy. He called upon the wandering Israelites to make alters, Exodus 20:24-25, build stone piles, Joshua 4:1-9, and to do things that would bring back stories and memories of the past. On many occasions, God also used the idea of legacies to help His people. Jesus loved the idea of legacy and He left us a blessed legacy through the Lord’s Supper.Ģ3 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,Ģ4 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you do this in remembrance of me.”Ģ5 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”Ģ6 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. ![]()
